We can get every kind of weather in April and it just happened to be an 30 mph crosswind on this particular evening. We had 64 strong finishers cross the line and I am impressed with the toughness I saw out on the road last night. Despite the conditions, I only heard about a few folks finding the ditch, and no one seriously injured. Thanks for a successful and safe start to the TT season.

Below are preliminary results. We had no issues with timing last night so they should be accurate but if you think there's a mistake, please e-mail me and we'll work to get it corrected. We'll have series points posted ahead of the next race and I have a few fun things I'm working on for this season... more info to come.

RESULTS

Thanks again to the volunteers from Zealous Racing, our top notch official Bruce Pesch, and everybody who showed up last night.

Ryan French

Zealous Racing

Des Moines, IA

Elkhart Time Trial #1 is still on.

Looks like we will be fortunate enough to have dry weather for the first Elkhart TT. Steven@robinsoncentral.net

Some notable results: Jeff Barnes, ICCC, with a strong finish to the season, takes the men's 1,2, teammate Brendan Keely, takes the Cat 3 Division narrowly over Kevin Templ, Bikes2You, and Kris Kunze, Rassmussens, in a very close race. Will we see these 3 moving up soon?

In the Men's 4 division, Jason Berends made a strong run with 2 victories on the final weekend, but Kevin Severs holds him off to win the men 4s.

Paul Denninger scored enough with his victory at Big Creek in the 40+ to take the win a day early over Scott Wall (3 time champion).

The 50+ and Women's Open, 2 categories decided early in the season, held true to form with Chris Eastburn winning both of the final races to extend his victory margin and Lisa Vetterlein winning at East Village as well.

The Women's 4s came down to the wire again with Dee Mable outpacing Cara Hamann for the win. These 2 should be moving up next year, opening the door to some new competition.

We'll definitely be back and better in 2011.

Iowa Cup Standings after State Road Race

The 2010 Iowa Cup presented by Zealous Consulting heads into the final weekend of racing with close battles in nearly every category.

The men's team race, Iowa City Cycling Club looks poised to repeat as champions. They have a 32 point lead on 2nd place Bikes2You and will have a strong contingent of riders in Des Moines for the final weekend.

The women's team race is a little closer fight with ICCC making up 13 points on leader Punk Rock Cycling at the State Road Race. 26 points is a lot to make up, but, with 2 races there's a chance.

The women's open and Men's 50+ category are both wrapped up with Lisa Vetterlein the champion in the Women's open and Chris Eastburn taking the 50+ title. The only question remaining in the Women's race is who will take 3rd. Eastburn's 2nd place in the State Road Race earned him the guaranteed win going into the final weekend. Dan Shaffer's 3rd at State, puts him in position to overtake Tom Eaton for 2nd.

The Cat 4 Men have yet to overtake upgraded leader Vance Fletcher, however, 2nd-4th sit 1,2, and 3 points behind and one or all of them should make up the final podium. Travis Jass leads the way with 28 points but Kevin Severs is the hotest rider in the category, scoring his 27 points in the last 4 races. Gavin Huseboe is 1 point behind Severs in 3rd.

The other category being led by an upgraded rider is the Women's cat 4. Dee Mable won the State Road Race and sits 1 point back of the current leader. Cara Hamann, who finished 2nd to Dee, trails by 5 points.

Paul Denninger chose to race the 40+ instead of the 1,2 race and extended his lead by 3 points over Scott Wall. Wall was 2nd to Denninger on the day and in the standings. Jim Cochran and Jerome Rewerts sit tied, well behind, for 3rd.

In the Men's Cat 3 race, Kris Kunze scored the win and moved himself into contention, 4th place (active 3s) and 12 points behind leader Brendan Kealey. Kevin Tempel and Andrew Buntz sit 2nd and 3rd among current cat 3s. If any of those riders want the podium, they'll need to unseat 3 upgraded riders sitting 2nd-4th currently.

Jeff Barnes tightened the Men's 1,2 race in a big way with his victory on Saturday. Only 1 point seperates leader Bryan Moritz and Barnes. This category will come down to the final weekend with 7 riders in mathematical chances to win. The winner should come from the current top 3: Moritz, Barnes, and Derek Cassady.

Click on the Zealous Racing logo to the left for full standings.

The next race in the series is the Big Creek Road Race, Saturday August 21. This is a short, flat race that can produce a surprise winner in any category. The final race is the next day: The East Village Criterium. In contrast to Big Creek, there is no hiding and only the strongest will take the victory. It will be a great weekend of racing with something for everyone.

Click on the flyers below for more details:

Iowa Cup update-Standings after Clear Lake

The 2010 IA Cup, presented by Zealous Consulting, competition is heating up in every category with just 3 races remaining.

The Men's team competition continues to be dominated by Iowa City Cycling Club, holding a 29 point lead over Bikes2You.

Punk Rock Cycling holds an even larger advantage over 2nd place Iowa City Cycling Club, in the Women's team competition.

Bryan Moritz, Bikes2You, extended his lead in the Men's Cat 1,2 division with his finish as first Iowan on Saturday's Clear Lake Criterium. Teamate Derek Cassady scored 4 points to remain in 2nd place, Jeff Barnes, Iowa City Cycling Club, scored 7 points Saturday and 1 on Sunday to put him into a tie for 3rd with Lane Anderson, Zealous Racing, who scored 10 points for Sunday's win in the Clear Lake Road Race.

In the Cat 3 competition, Brendan Keely, ICCC, scored 12 points over the 2 day Clear Lake weekend to finally overtake the upgraded riders for the lead in the division. Teamate Mattias Perret, and Andrew Buntz, University of Iowa, are the next 2 remaining cat 3s in the hunt for the win.

Travis Jass, Fort Dodge Trisport, scored 8 points on the weekend to put himself within 1 point of upgraded leader, Vance Fletcher, in the Men's 4 division. Gavin Huseboe, Central IA Cycling Club, and his 7 points for 2nd in Saturday's Criterium, puts him 2nd, 2 points behind Jass. One of those 2 should be able to score the 2 points to overtake Fletcher. Watch out for Huseboe's new teamate, Kevin Severs, who scored the win in the Crit, as a potential winner.

The women's open has, in all intents and purposes, been won by Lisa Vetterlein, Punk Rock Cycling, only 1 point from mathematically eliminating the competition with 3 races still remaining.

Dee Mable's, VeloRosa, 17 points for the weekend, has put her in the virtual lead in the Women's 4 division, only 8 points from overtaking the 2 upgraded riders ahead of her. Cara Hamann, ICCC, trails Mable by 4 points. This should be a great race to watch, down the home stretch.

The 40+ division race tightened with Scott Wall scoring 14 points on the weekend to move within 3 points of the lead. With 2 road races and only 1 criterium remaining, Wall looks like the favorite to win, with current leader, Paul Denninger, Velosport, racing 1,2 races instead of Masters.

50+ leader, Chris Eastburn, ICCC, and Tom Eaton, Central Iowa Cycling Club, flip-flopped 1st and 2nd place finishes to score 17 points each on the weekend. Eastburn leads by 19 over Eaton going into the final 3 races, making him the probable winner in the category.

Next up in the series: The Iowa State Road Race Championships, August 7.

Elkhart #4 results posted

Click on the link to the left, for results for Elkhart TT #4.

Elkhart TT #4, Tonight!

Registration: opens at 5:00 p.m. closes at 6:15
Start times: first rider off at 6:30 riders start in 30 second intervals and start in the order registered.
Location: course starts on the south edge of Elkhart Iowa on R70.
Parking: you must park in a public parking area. Also please remember that the road is open to traffic so don't hang out on the road before and after the race.
Race director
Chad Vande Lune
515-250-2495
chadbike1970@yahoo.com

Iowa Cup Standings After State Criterium

The standings for the 2010 Iowa Cup presented by Zealous Consulting have been updated after race #7, the State Criterium Championships.

In the men's team competition, Mercy/Specialized (Iowa City Cycling Club) continues to lead the way. Many of the battles are heating up after Sunday's Rose Festival Road Race.

In the Men 1,2s team competition, Zealous Racing got into the action, scoring 11 points, but Mercy/Specialized is holding onto a large lead, also scoring 11 on the day. Bikes2You currently sits 2nd.

In the 1,2 individual event, Brian West, Colorbiotics, scored the 10 points with his 2nd place finish, moving him into sole possession of 4th place. Jared Osterloh, Zealous, and Derrick Cassady, Bikes2You, now sit tied 1 point behind West after finishing 4th and 5th respectively.

The top 3 of the 3s, hit hard this year by upgrades, are held by riders now Cat 2s. The other riders will need to score more points to get the category win, but there are plenty of races left for that to happen. TJ Tollaksen, Ruster Sports, and Steven Robinson, Zealous, moved within a couple points of the virtual leaders with their 1st and 2nd place finishes.

In the Cat 4 division, Gavin Huseboe, Central Iowa Cycling Club, was the only early season contender to score points, with his 2nd place finish. Tony Muse scored the win and the 10 points.

The most competitive division, again this year, is the Women Cat 4. Katie Fistler's, Punk Rock Cycling, finish as first Iowan gave her enough to overtake Cassandra Kessler, Iowa City Cycling Club, (3rd place) by 1 point for the lead in the category.

The women's open race was won by newly upgraded Rebecca Miller, Colorbiotics, Lisa Vetterlein, Punk Rock Cycling, still maintains a huge lead in the series.

The ever consistant Scott Wall, Colorbiotics, moved into contention for the 40+ category with his win. Paul Denniger, Velosport, maintains a 2 point lead over Jim Cochrane, Atlas, and 3 point lead over Wall.

In the 50+ category, Tom Eaton and Randy Jones, Colorbiotics, take 1st and 2nd and move into a close 3rd and 4th behind 2nd place Greg Harper, Melon City Cycling Club. Chris Eastburn, Hawkeye Bike Association, holds onto the lead in the division.

Click on the Zealous Racing logo to the left for complete 2010 Iowa Cup standings.

Next up, Gold Pointe Fitness Criterium, this Saturday, June 26 in Cedar Rapids.

IA Cup Continues Sunday at the Rose Festival Road Race

The 2010 Iowa Cup presented by Zealous Consulting resumes this Sunday at the Rose Festival Road Race near State Center, IA. In the Women's Team division, Punk Rock Cycling will be looking to run away with it, unless we see Iowa City Cycling put up a fight starting this weekend.

The Men's 1/2 is still being lead by Bryan Moritz, Bikes2You, with Clark Priebe, Powerade/Independant Fabrications, and Jeff Barns, Mercy/Specialized in a tight battle for 2nd and 3rd.

The Women's Open is being dominated by Lisa Vetterlein, Punk Rock Cycling, with wins in every IA Cup race so far.

In the Men's Cat 3s, upgrades by the 2 leaders have opened the door to Austin Turner, Colorbiotics, Mattias Perret, Iowa City Cycling, and teamates Ryan Jacobsen and Nate Kullbom of Atlas/Ecolips. Those 4 riders are within 3 points of each other.

The Men's Cat 4 division is being led by Junior rider Vance Fletcher of DMOS, with Jay Gorsh, Atlas/Ecolips, his closest competition.

In the 40+ division, Paul Denninger, Velosport, has used consistant results to take the lead, with Jim Cochran, Atlas/Ecolips, 2 points back.

Chris Eastburn, Hawkeye Bike Association, used a great first weekend to take the lead with Greg Harper, Melon City Cycling, gaining ground but still 7 points back.

In the always hotly contested women's 4 competition, Rebecca Miller, Colorbiotics, has used 3 straight wins to tie Cassandra Kessler, Iowa City Cycling, on points in the lead with Katie Fistler, Punk Rock Cycling, a close 3rd.

The Rose Festival Road Race will Mark the halfway point of this year's Iowa Cup Series. All but 1 category remain very competitive. With 2 Cup races within 6 days (State Crit, the 26th), the question is: will the battle in your category heat up, or will the leaders put distance between them and the rest?

Elkhart Time Trial #3, Rescheduled to June 17

Info: Thursday June 17

Registration: opens at 5:00 p.m. closes at 6:15

Start times: first rider off at 6:30 riders start in 30 second intervals and start in the order registered.

Location: course starts on the south edge of Elkhart Iowa on R70.

Parking: you must park in a public parking area. We have some exciting racing shaping up among the categories. With the new rule that allows a rider to "throw out" 2 races, almost all the categories will go right down to the last race in the series.

Lisa Vetterlein and Punk Rock Cycling extended their domination of the women's open categories with Lisa's 2nd place (1st Iowan) at Snake and her solo win at Muscatine, along with Keely Shannon's finish as 2nd Iowan both days. Lisa has accrued all 50 points available, so far. Keely moves into 2nd in the category, 3 points ahead of Kim Eppen, ICCC.

In the Women's Cat 4 race, Rebecca Miller, Colorbiotics, won both days, extending her winning streak to 3 in a row, taking over the lead in the category by virtue of tie breaker over Cassandra Kessler, ICCC. Kessler hung tough, finishing 3rd at Snake and 2nd Iowan at Muscatine. Katie Fistler, PRC, Finished 2nd on Saturday and 3rd Iowan on Sunday to move into 3rd overall.

Chad Bishop, Melon City Bike Club, took control in the Men's Cat 3 race, finishing as 2nd Iowan on Saturday and winning in his home town of Muscatine. With the upgrade of former leader Ryan French, Zealous, AJ Turner, Colorbiotics is Bishop's closest competition.

In the Men's 4 race, Jay Gorsch, Atlas, used 2 1st Iowan finishes to vault himself into 2nd overall, but leader, Vance Fletcher, DMOS, remained consistant with 2nd and 3rd places to maintain a good lead on the field.

A great race is shaping up in the 40+ category with Paul Denninger taking over the lead with 2 3rd place finishes and Jim Cochran nipping at his heals with 2 2nd place finishes. Former leader Cody McCullogh's absence, opened the door for the new leaders.

Greg Harper, Melon City, gained small ground on 50+ leader Chris Eastburn, Hawkeye Bike Assoc., in his hometown race, moving to within 7 points of Chris for the lead.

In an unofficial "off weekend" for the Cat 1,2 Iowan's. Joe Hetrick, Mercy/Specialized, was the only rider to finish either race and pick up the 10 pts individually, and for his team.

Click on the Zealous Racing Logo at the right for complete standings.

Next race on the schedule: Rose Festival Road Race, Sunday June 20.

The Rose Fest RR is part of a great 3 days of racing with the Rose Fest Crit on Friday, Green Days Crit in Johnston on Saturday, and the Road Race on Sunday.

June 2 Getting TT Results

The final run of the Getting TT Results training series in West Des Moines was Wednesday June 2.

Results

Getting TT Results Race #2 Results

Results from the 2nd race in the GettingTTResults Time Trial series, held May 26 in West Des Moines:

Place Start Time Bib # The State Fairgrounds Criterium produced a couple new leaders, ground gained on a couple leaders, and a couple that extended their leads:

In the Men Cat 1/2 division, Bryan Moritz, Bikes2You used his finish as first Iowan to claim the top spot from Jeff Barnes, Mercy/Specialized.

In the Men Cat 3 division, Ryan French, Zealous Racing, increased his lead with a 4th place finish. Chad Bishop, Melon City Cycling Club, won the race and, of course, picked up the 10 points for first Iowan.

Vance Fletcher, DMOS, took over the category lead (actually tied with Mattias Perrett, now a cat 3) with a hard fought victory.

In the 40+ category, Paul Denninger, Velosport, closed the gap to the leader Cody McCullough, Powerade, with his finish as 3rd Iowan on the day.

John Adamson, Broken Spoke, gained ground on the leader Chris Eastburn, Hawkeye Bike Assoc. in the 50+ category with his 4th place finish.

Lisa Vetterlien, Punk Rock Cycling, extended her lead in the women's open race, racking up another 10 points for the maximum 30 total so far.

Cassandra Kessler, Iowa City Cycling Club, was able to finish 1 place better than Dee Mable, Velo Rosa, to break their deadlock on the lead.

Next up are the historic Snake Alley Criterium and Melon City Criterium, races four and five in the 2010 Iowa Cup presented by Zealous Consulting.

Click on the Zealous Racing logo for complete standings

State Fair Crit Results

Photo courtesy of Steve Fry (Fryguy images)

A grueling course faced racers on Sunday at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in the State Fair Criterium presented by Zealous Consulting.

The day started with the Cat 5 race. She shook off her early companion, Rebecca Miller, Colorbiotics to take the solo victory. Nate Kullbom took the sprint from the 5 riders left in the lead group.

Cat 3:

1) Chad Bishop, Melon City Bike Club

2) Nate Kullbom, Atlas

3) Mattias Perrett, ICCC

4) Ryan French, Zealous Racing

5) AJ Turner, Colorbiotics

6) Ryan Jacobsen, Atlas

The Masters 40+, 50+, and Jrs took the course at the same time with Jacob Leih outpacing Perry Leysons for victory in the Junior Race.

In the 50+ race, Lou Waugaman kept pace with the lead group for most of the race to take the win in the 50+ category.

In the 40+ race, Dewey Dickey attacked a select group with Cam Kirkpatrick reeling him in with 10 laps to go. Jerome Rewerts attacked his companions and chased the 2 leaders solo, coming within 5 seconds but unable to catch before the end of the race. Kirkpatrick outsprinted Dickey for the victory.

JR results:

1) Jacob Leih, DMOS

2) Perry Leysens, DMOS

3) Ryan Mittleberg, Mack Racing

4) Glen Houts, Powerade

5) Lacey Douglas, DMOS

6) Nikolas Ruis, Velo Veloce Cycling

50+

1) Lou Waugaman, Velosport

2) Greg Harper, Melon City Bike Club

3) Tom Eaton, Colorbiotics

40+

1) Cam Kirkpatrick, Rassmussens

2) Dewey Dickey, Mercy/Specialized

3) Jerome Rewerts, Zealous Racing

4) Paul Denninger, Velosport

Next up was the Cat 4 race. Many of the racers competed earlier in the day in the Cat 3/4 division. Vance Fletcher and Joe Nellis worked together for many laps with Fletcher finally shaking Nellis to take the victory in solo fashion.

Cat 4:

1) Vance Fletcher, DMOS

2) Joe Nellis, U of I

3) Nathan Hicks, DMOS

4) Travis Jass, Fort Dodge Tri Sport

5) Jeff Osborn, Rassmussens

The day's final race, the 1,2,3 race was animated early by Randy Reichardt, Vitamin Cottage, who gained an early advantage over the chasing field. When he was caught, a select group of leaders formed. Barnes attacked late in the Road Race to finish 4th on the day and bridged to the breakaway on Sunday to finish 8th on the day, 2nd Iowan again. Bryan Moritz soloed to victory in the RR, and Clark Priebe finished 5th in the Crit, first Iowan. They are tied for 2nd in the series.

On the strength of a great day at Old Cap, Mercy/Specialized takes a solid lead in the Men's team competition over Bikes 2 You/World Of Bikes

Lisa Vetterlein outsprinted Kim Eppen both days to take the maximum 20 points. Kim is 2nd with 14 points.

Mercy/Specialized leads the women's competition over Lisa (Punk Rock Cycling)

In the Cat 3 competition, Ryan French's victory on Saturday and 1 point from Sunday earned him the lead in the division with Ryan Jacobsen 2nd as a result of his finish as first Iowan at Old Capitol.

the 2009 Cat 4 competition saw no one show consistancy to take a commanding lead, this year, Mattias Perret may be changing that. Perret took first in Saturday's RR and 2nd in Sunday's crit to hold a solid lead heading into Race #3.

The Masters 40+ Cat, full of new riders this year, is led by Cody McCullogh on the strength of his overall win on Saturday and finish as first Iowan on Sunday. Another new 40+er, Paul Denninger, sits in 2nd.

Chris Eastburn leads the 50+ with Dan Shaffer in 2nd. These 2 were embroiled in a back and forth race all last year and it looks like 2010 won't be any different

The Women's 4 race features the closest competition coming out of weekend #1. Dee Mable and Cassandra Kessler stand tied atop the standings with Katie Fistler a close 3rd, only 4 points back. By virtue of overall finish (1st and 5th vs 1st and 7th), Kessler holds the lead on paper heading into Race #3

Race #3 in the Iowa Cup is the Zealous Consulting State Fairgrounds Criterium. Remember, the leaders of each individual division receive free entry to the next race (or weekend) in the series in their division. Jeff Barnes, Lisa, French, Mattias Perrett, Cody, Eastburn, and Cassandra have all earned free entry for the Fairgrounds Crit.

With Free entries to Memorial weekend on the line for the leaders, Race #3 is an important day for anyone within striking distance of the lead. It will mean $60-$80 worth of entry fee at Snake and Muscatine.

Click on the Zealous Racing logo below for full standings.

Click on the Zealous Racing Logo to the left for the State Fair Crit Flyer

State Fair Criterium, May 16, Getting Bigger!

Click on the Zealous Racing Icon below for the Updated Flyer. Additionally, 2009 winners will receive free entry to the Iowa City Road Race, the first race in the 2010 series. In the case of a weekend of racing, free entry will be determined by scoring after the weekend, not during.

The race promoters have seen the excitement in the chase for the cup across the categories and have stepped up to offer the free entry reward. We really appreciate their support.

The race schedule (to be announced) will either be 11 or 12 races, new this year will be the ability to drop 1 race from scoring, increasing the competition right up to the final race in the series.

Look for our next announcement: The Schedule!

Spring Training Races

Kicked off the last weekend in February, the spring training season in the midwest quenches the racing thirst of those putting in the winter training and provides untapped intensity for those who have trained and jumpstarts the training for those who haven't.

The "Upcoming Events" is back. Thank you, Dave:

When Life Happens!

This year stated out like all the others. I made a list of races I wanted to do and set cycling goals. My training got off to a good start in January and February, and then life happened. Things got busy with work and with the family. My focus on training was sidetracked as was my motivation. If you have been training for any number of years, you can probably relate as you have likely had this happen to you as well. Training takes a lot of mental, physical and emotional energy as well as a lot of motivation. When other more pressing issues come up, it can be difficult to continue to train with determination.

I often use the analogy that my training is my barometer of life. When my life is going along well, and my work, family and finances are in order, then I have the time and energy to focus on training and it goes well. But when one or more of these more important factors needs to be dealt with, my training is the first thing to go. Let’s review briefly the key factors required for consistent training.

Physical energy: Obviously training requires a lot of physical energy. If you are involved in other physical activities in your work life or family life, this will take a toll on your training and will interfere with recovery from your training. You may not even realize it but simply standing or walking a lot can take a lot out of you physically. And don’t overlook sleep. If you aren’t getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night when training hard, you will likely not be fully recovered each morning and over time this will compromise your training.

Mental energy: Training requires a lot of mental energy. To push yourself and to make yourself suffer during intense training, you need a lot of mental fortitude. Most likely you all have experienced days where you’ve had a mentally exhausting day at work and when it comes time to train after work, you just can’t push yourself. The last thing you want to do is impose more stress or fatigue on yourself.

Emotional energy: This is similar to mental energy in that you may struggle to have the energy to force yourself to work hard or to make yourself suffer. However its cause is somewhat different. Emotional stress can be the result of any number of things such as a family illness, loss of a job, financial stress, or even something positive like moving to a new home or birth of a child. The last thing on your mind is being able to pedal a bicycle faster.

Here are a couple of ideas to employ when ‘life happens’ to you. First of all, prioritize all the important things in your life. Step back and put your training and racing in perspective with what else is important in your life in the long term. If your work, family, or friends require extra time and effort, be sure to give these the time they require. Unless you make a living pedaling a bike, remember that cycling is a hobby and will need to take a backseat from time to time when more important issues in life come up. You need to get your life in order so that you can resume your hobby. Remember though that your cycling will always be there for you when life settles back down. It’s something you can do the rest of your life. When life hiccups, deal with it and get your life back in order. Your training and fitness may be sidelined temporarily, but its time will come again.

Secondly, even when your life gets hectic and your structured training program may be blown to bits, still get out and do some training even if the frequency, intensity and/or distance is cut back. The last thing you want to do is hang up your bike completely. Physical exercise is important for your overall health and will help relieve stress as well as help you sleep better. Try to maintain a baseline of conditioning even during stressful times. This will allow you to regain your high level of fitness more quickly when you resume your training.

Undoubtedly you will have times when your training and racing wanes both during the season and from year to year. Keep your hobby in perspective and don’t let it interfere with more important issues in your life. When life happens, deal with it. Strive for balance in your life and your training and racing will again become a rewarding part of your life.

Ride on -- David Ertl
___________________________________

David Ertl is a USA Cycling Level 1 (Elite) Coach and NSCA Certified Personal Trainer. Our local heros are no exception.

The workhorse, Jason McCartney, Coralville, reunites with Lance Armstrong on Team Radio Shack. McCartney rode for the Discovery Channel team before moving to CSC/Saxo Bank for the past 2 years.

Team Radio Shack also signed Matthew Busche, Luther College, and Bjorn Selander, WI. Both riders have had a meteoric rise to the top. Busche, a cat 2 rider just 1 year ago, finished the season on Kelly Benefits, raced with the leaders at the Tour of Utah, and had an amazing 5th Place in the National Road Race Championships. Selander, 2008 U23 National Cyclocross Champion, was a big name early in cyclocross but relatively obscure on the road, until a breakout season in 2009 with the Trek-Livestrong Team. His consistant results all season earned him his spot on Team Radio Shack.

Tom Zirbel, Clear Lake and Wartburg College, 2009 NRC champion, 2nd in the Pro Time Trial National Championship, 4th at worlds, makes the jump from the Bissell Pro cycling team to Garmin and the Pro Tour. He will bring his TTing prowess to the European Peloton and major US races.

Nick Frey, Des Moines, will be back in the Pro ranks for Jamis-Sutter Home presented by Colavita. Frey, recent Princeton grad and owner of Boo Bicycles, maker of Bamboo Frames, also made his name in TTs with a 2007 National U23 Championship. He raced professionally for Time in 2008.

Tim Farnham and Matt Landen, both originally from Nebraska, will be racing on the new Adageo Energy squad. Farnham moves from Bissell and Landen will be a first year pro.

Alex Boyd, NE, moves to Kelly Benefit Strategies.

Jingle Cross Rocked!

Another year, more growth for Jingle Cross. Here's who we see as the matchups to watchout for in each category:

Masters 35+: Steve Bullerman, Chad Vandelune, and Paul Denninger all have wins this year, but will others who haven't raced the category jump in to the mix, like Jim Cochran, Jerome Rewerts, or Cam Kirkpatrick?

Masters 45+: Todd Gillihan has ran away with this cat in Iowa this year, with Jim Robidoux providing his closest competition among the Iowa Riders.

Masters 55+: As usual, John Adamson, Landon Beachy, and Kim West should be the class of this category

Single Speed: This category is a wild card, as it can be anyone from any category. Andy Cornelison and Jared Osterloh have been racing all season on single speeds, but if Brian Eppen races, he'll win

Juniors: Tyler Rushing (see above about Brian Eppen) Vance Fletcher and Zach and Jacob Vanderhorst will also be competitive

Cat 1,2,3: without a preview of the battle in '09, it's hard to say whether Tony Nichols will be able to dethrone Brian Eppen for 1,2,3 supremacy. JJ Bailey, Nate Kullbom, Cam Kirkpatrick, and Kevin McConnell (if he races 1,2,3 instead of 3) will also figure into the medal mix.

WMN 1,2,3: Kim Eppen showed her dominance in this state at Spooky Cross, with Robin Williams and Lisa Sievers favorites to round out the podium. Darcy Stanford and Brittany McConnell will also figure into the mix.

WMN 4: Wanda Berg, Katie Fistler, Kristen Burgess, and Cindy DuBois should all be factors for medals in this category.

Cat 3: This category will be the hardest to predict until you see who lines up. There are so many different riders that could be fighting for the podium with Kevin McConnell, Jim Cochran, Ryan Jacobsen, Ryan French, and Jared Osterloh all having won Cat 3 races during the year, however, if they choose to race different categories, the door will be open for Geoff Perrill, Steven Robinson, Rich Wince, Dan Galles, and Carl Buchanan.

Cat 4: In what will most likely be the most spectator friendly race of the day, saved for last, Spooky Cross winners Evan Peterson and Doug Vanderwelde and Scheels series standouts Steve Reynolds, Josh Wandry, Jason Plunkett, and Tyler Rushing should battle it out for medals, although, in this category, winners can show up out of no where.

Cyclocross season turns a page

With the Scheels Central Iowa Cyclocross Series wrapping up last weekend at Spooky Cross, Iowa's cyclocross season enters it's 2nd chapter. Kevin McConnell took an early lead and built it up to 2 minutes by the finish to take the 3s win and overall win. Chad Vandelune, Jim Cochran, Matt Gumm, and Todd Gillihan formed a group and stayed together until 2 laps to go, when Vandelune attacked and only Cochran could go with him. On the last lap, another attack by Vandelune secured his 35+ win and 2nd in the race. Gillihan came in 5th, taking the 45+ category.

1. Kevin McConnell

2. Jared Osterloh, riding Single speed, took an early lead and held off Joshua Wandry for the win. Wandry took the 4s win ahead of Steve Reynolds. Tyler Rushing, finishing 6th overall, took the Jrs win in impressive fashion.

1. Jared Osterloh

2. (1, 4s) Joshua Wandry

3. A lead group formed early with Todd Gillihan pushing the pace, Chad Vandelune, Steve Bullerman, Steven Robinson, Rich Wince, Geoff Perrill, and Kyle Flecher making up the front of the race. Osterloh, who faught back after losing his chain on the first lap, once again lost his chain with 2 lap to go and would not catch back on, riding alone for 5th. The other 4 stayed together and with 1/2 a lap to go, Reynolds attacked. DeWilde and Wandry were able to respond, taking the sprint for 1st and 2nd, Andy Cornelison ended the day in 3rd (1st single speed), and Reynolds 4th.

1. Sunday, racers were treated to a first class event that seemed like a race that's been around for years.

Results:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/bikeiowa/message/9466

Saturday's Big Creek Road Race was a nice compliment to the weekend. August has seemed like the longest month in history but, finally, the weekend of some great racing in Central Iowa is here.

With a long layoff in local racing, there's bound to be some surprises. Who's maintained mid season form, who ramped up their training, who's getting in shape for cross racing.

There's also always the question of which Iowa racers will race, and how many quality out of staters will make the trip to Des Moines.

The East Village Criterium is the finale of the season-long Iowa Cup. With double points on offer, the winner of Sunday will have the inside track for overall victory in each category. In the Men's 1_2 category, the winner should come from the current top 3: Sean Walker, Brian Eppen, and Jared Osterloh while Lane Anderson remains mathematically in contention. In the Men's cat 3 race, Derek Cassady needs to finish top 4 to guarantee victory. Victories by either Carsen Christen and Jerome Rewerts and Cassady finishing outside the points would give either of them the win. In the women's Open race, the battle between Kelli Mente and Kim Eppen will come down to the finale. With a 6 way tie in the Men's cat 4 race at 17 points and the winner of Sunday's race earning 20 points, East Village is more important to this category than any other. In the Masters 40+ the top 3, Jon Nelson, Scott Wall, and Shawn Loomis are all in contention for overall victory, while in the Masters 50+, the top 2, Chris Eastburn and Daniel Shaffer, have seperated themselves from the pack. In the women's cat 4 race, Cassandra Kessler, Dee Mable, and Sara Broek are in a tight battle with the winner probably being determined by East Village.

Whether this weekend's racing is the culmination of your training, a jumpstart for your fall racing, or just another race, the weekend before Gateway Cup, there'll be some great racing action to be had in Des Moines.

Where to look for future cycling talent

Start searching those small Iowa colleges for the next big racer. The Big Creek Road Race, Saturday Aug 29, and the East Village Criterium, Sunday, Aug 30, will offer racers great competition and a worthwhile trip to Des Moines.

The weekend's premier event, the East Village Criterium, brought to you by the Rassmussens Cycling Team, DMOS/RDMB Cycling Team, and Punk Rock Cycling, boasts over $5k of prize money with a great course in Des Moines' East Village. The start/finish will be at the steps of Iowa's majestic State Capitol building. The East Village Criterium is the finale of the 2009 Iowa Cup Series with double points on offer. Go to http://www.eastvillagecrit.com/ for more information.

The ALL9Yards Women's Cycling Team brings the Big Creek Road Race (raced in April in 2008, and May in 2007) to the weekend. Adding a 2nd race to the weekend will give competitors even more reason to travel to Iowa's Capitol City. But this race is not just an "add on", it's a great event in it's own right. With nearly $2000 prize money on offer, and a nice 6 mile road circuit starting and finishing in beautiful Big Creek State Park on the Metro's Northwest edge, the racing will get off to a great start. Strong riding and a well-deserved win, for sure. Although, not to take anything away from his win, he did get a little bit of a break, being allowed to get a gap on the downhill into the river valley. Don't know what the breakaway companions were thinking there.

3) Very respectible turnout in the Men's 4 and 5 fields.

4) A super well organized event. Thanks ICCC.

5) I know it's not politically correct to point this out, but, 4 women in the women's 1,2,3 field?!?!? Who wants to do that for 81 miles? I'd like to hear from the women. Do you want to see more Women 1,2,3,4 fields? I know when we suspect a small 1,2 field in the men's we've been known to email the promoter and request a 1,2,3 race. Makes for much more fun, especially in a long road race.

New Format-We're back!

You can see, cyclingupdate.com has undergone a major change.
